BIO

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer with a postgraduation in Rehabilitation of Built Heritage by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (2010) and a PhD in Civil Engineering by the University of Aveiro (2015). Currently, I am a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Civil Engineering at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and an invited Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra. I am also an Editor-in-Chief of Conservar Património, a SCOPUS and Web-of-Science indexed journal dedicated to heritage studies, a Co-Editor-in-Chief of GeoHazards, a multidisciplinary open-access journal devoted to theoretical and applied research across the whole spectrum of geomorphological hazards, and a Section Editor-in-Chief of Fire, an international open-access journal about the science, policy, and technology of fires and how they interact with communities and the environment. My academic activity has been dedicated to studying the structural vulnerability of historical buildings and urban areas to natural and anthropogenic hazards, particularly earthquakes, fires, floods, and landslides. More recently, I have focused on the interaction between different hazards and physical and social vulnerability, both in the context of single, and compound and cascading hazards.

Ranked twice among the top 2% scientists in the world by Elsevier BV and Stanford University (2021 and 2022), I am the author of more than one hundred and sixty scientific and technical publications, including 74 articles in international peer-reviewed SCI journals. According to Scopus (access date 11/04/2023), my h-index is 22 (h-index 26, according to Google Scholar) with a total number of 1,473 citations (2,261 in Google Scholar) by 835 documents. I have participated in eight R&D projects (four ongoing) and am currently leading one MIT Portugal research project. I have supervised 25 Master’s Dissertations (23 concluded and two ongoing) and ten PhD Thesis (four completed and six ongoing).
